Summary:   The Dean of Student and Financial Success (DSSf) will be a supportive leader who will help the College achieve its goals of increasing student success, ensuring financial stability, maintaining an inclusive college environment, and broadening strategic partnerships.  As a member of the college executive leadership team, the Dean plays a critical role in fostering equity and student success and sustaining an inclusive campus climate. With a focus on closing equity gaps in educational outcomes for students, the position is responsible for providing leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of student support programs and services while engaging with the external community to create partnerships and develop strong, beneficial relationships. The Dean must have a collaborative and community-building leadership style, be well-versed in holistic student development theories, and have an understanding and appreciation for the mission of community colleges. Finally, the Dean must have a demonstrated ability to engage with the college community at all levels (executive, administration, management, faculty, students, and staff).

The Dean of Student and Financial Success provides direction and leadership over the Student Success Advisors and is responsible for creating / maintaining an institutional community-wide culture of compliance. The Dean ensures campus-level crisis management and oversees student conduct (to include Title IX investigations) in accordance with all relevant internal / external policies.  The Dean will lead a team of Advisors to ensure they are meeting all Financial Aid Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and are executing financial planning for continuing students in accordance with federal (Title IV), state, Department of Veteran Affairs and institutional rules and regulations. Additionally, the Dean will support continuing students in completing class registration, career planning and assistance in resolving issues that would inhibit completion of their academic journey at the Art Institute.  The Dean ensures that the Advisors are providing consistent and timely responses to student requests for information, aid eligibility and disbursement, balance inquires and ensures the proper documentation of all communication occurs within student information systems (CampusNexus, Campus Ivy). In addition, the Dean owns, leads and guides all aspects of student life and programming for the institution.

Key Job Elements: 

  • Works with students and parents regarding financial planning / eligibility and ensures that assigned students are planned and aware of their financial obligations to the school, registered for classes and supported in regard to questions and needed follow up.
  • Responsible for developing a culture which facilitates student engagement and regular assessment of student feedback and satisfaction.
    • Provides a co-curricular (i.e., health and wellness, financial literacy) student experience which engages student with the college community outside of the classroom.
    • Leads or participates in student engagement and student success initiatives.
    • Ensures the quality of student satisfaction as it relates to Student Affairs.
    • Oversees the administration of student satisfaction inventories and communicates results to the campus community; facilitates strategic planning and initiatives in response to inventory outcomes.
    • Monitor and provide guidance on the implementation of New Student Orientation across the applicable campuses to ensure compliance with all Ai policies, procedures, and standards. Ensure that all applicable students are properly oriented.
  • Provides timely reporting to President on status of all students, which includes detailed strategies to address any gaps such as any at-risk students on the Continuing Student Review (CSR) report, Title IV, conduct violations Title IX, Disability Services and crisis management.
  • Maintain consistent and timely communication with Academic Affairs leadership to trouble shoot issues with student communication / support in real time.  The Dean is responsible for ensuring that all students receive documented and timely communication from their Advisor and follows-up on students who are not registered or needs assistance with the financial aid process.
  • Assures that the Student Success Advisors are in compliance with Federal, State and Art Institutes rules and regulations.  Ensure that all financial assistance programs available in the school are in compliance with all applicable regulations such as, Title IV, Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504, Jeanne Clery Act, SEVIS, accreditation standards, Family Education Rights to Privacy Act (FERPA), and Title IX.
  • Ensures Advisors maintain consistently clean files shown through Training Assessments for Compliance with Federal/State regulations and school policies and procedures (for the entire Student Success team).  Demonstrate proficiency in timely document collection and repack processing as defined by the Key Performance Indicators (KPI). 
    • Less than a 10% comment rate per term and less than a 5% potential liability rate for the year.
  • Serve as the international students Designated School Official (DSO) to ensure that appropriate support and services are in place at applicable campuses for the international student population.  Produce accurate and timely Institutional community-wide submissions of quarterly campus crime logs, financial reports, annual Clery reports, and other reports, as needed, in accordance with established due dates and policies.
  • In collaboration with the Student Conduct and Resolution team, Campus Presidents/Directors, investigate and resolve student complaints and misconduct, (including referral of Title IX investigations to the Title IX Coordinator), consistently across the Institutional campus community.
  • Partner with Senior Director and Regional Director of Financial Aid to identify and establish quarterly goals and run-rates for continuing student financial repackaging. Provides timely (weekly) status updates and includes detailed strategy to address staff performance gaps.  
  • Hire, train, manage and supervise Student Success Advisors.  Responsible for training and development of all Student Success staff, maintenance of planning load as needed, and provide for self and staff professional and personal development.

Job Requirements (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities): 

  • Knowledge:
    • Master’s degree in a related field required.
    • Five or more years of solid experience in financial aid or student advising.
    • Three or more years of supervisory experience
    • In depth knowledge of principles, practices, methodology, and procedures for the provision of student financial aid.
    • Knowledge of Art Institutes policies pertaining to the provision of student financial aid.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong interpersonal skills with both faculty and student populations.
    • Superior organizational and problem resolution skills.
    • Strong basic computer software (MS Office) skills as well as exposure to more concentrated financial aid/EDE software programs such as CampusIvy & Campus Nexus.
  • Abilities:
    • Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, and direct student financial assistance programs and initiatives.
    • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
    • Ability to interact effectively as a member of a team and work collaboratively with other departments.
    • Ability to listen to customers (e.g. students, staff, etc.) and to understand and respond positively to their requests.
